This year Africa was again represented at the annual BET International Awards and Wizkid seized the day having bagged the Best International Act from Africa, an award won by South Africa’s DJ Black Coffee last year.
The 2017 BET Awards was held on June 25, 2017, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony celebrated achievements in entertainment and honors music, sports, television, and movies released between April 1, 2016 and March 31, 2017.
Four Nigerian artistes, including Davido, Wizkid, Mr Eazi and Tekno were nominated for the 2017 BET Awards, alongside South Africa’s AKA, Babes Wodumo, Nasty C and Stonebwoy. However Nigeria’s Wizkid was not [physically] in Los Angeles to accept his award.
This is the second straight year that Wizkid will be winning the award; in 2016, Wizkid singer was nominated alongside Yemi Alade – and he won.
Meanwhile, Yvonne Chaka Chaka got a standing ovation as she accepted the Global Good award for her decades-long work in the humanitarian sphere.
Tanzania’s Ray Vanny won the Africa Viewer’s Choice Award.
“This means a lot to me,” Vanny remarked, “I’m feeling so good, I’m very grateful for that, I didn’t expect to get this so I thanks my fans and everybody who voted for me and everybody who support Ray Van.”
