SpongeBob SquarePants; What Is The Big Deal?

With over 50 million followers on Facebook, 10 seasons with over 200 episodes, SpongeBob SquarePants is one of the most popular and longest running TV shows ever created.

Having begun in 1999, SpongeBob Square Pants popularity has ever been increasing without ever slowing down.

Winning awards every year has become a normal thing when it comes to this television series. But for a TV show that is loved by kids, teens and surprisingly adults, you cannot help but wonder; what’s the big deal?

What is really interesting about Sponge Bob! Matter of fact it is not a regular television drama with your favorite stars with pretty faces; but an animation. SpongeBob SquarePants is not an animation with people like super hero characters, oh no.

This animation features a yellow square creature which seems to be a [sea] sponge; he wears pants which are square as the name implies and that lives at the bottom of the sea with a house which is a pineapple. This whole animation setup is in a bottom of a sea and all creatures you would find in a sea are characters. It’s like the creator wanted to let you know how these creatures relate and live.

Sponge is one creature that is almost loved by everyone in Bikini Bottom; which is his town; and he is also a famous fry cook who works at a restaurant called The Krusty Krab. The Krusty Krab is a restaurant owned by Mr. Krabs and it is the best restaurant known in Bikini Bottom for its delicious Krabby Patty buggers. Mr. Krabs is not alone in business; he has a rival restaurant called the Chum Bucket owned by a scientist called Plankton. Plankton is always making tricks to steal Mr. Krabs’ secret recipe for the Krabby Patty but all of them end up failing.

Sponge Bob has a best friend called Patric who is a star fish. They play together and do almost everything together and they are neighbors; but life as we know it, Sponge bob has a neighbor that does not like him that much. Squidward is co-worker of Sponge bob and also his neighbor.

Once I asked my youngest brother (he is 12) why he likes Sponge Bob so much . . . he told me it was funny and interesting. At another moment I asked my younger brother who is 17, and he also said the same thing. But for a cartoon character that is a square and bunch of sea creatures, what is so special about it that seems to be getting everyone’s attention.

I am the kind of person who grew up watching almost every cartoon there was. From Code Lyck, Invisible Man… and whatever seemed to be the hit of the time, including Pingu; oh yes Pingu, Ben 10 and a lot of others.

All that notwithstanding, I always find my attention extraordinarily caught by SpongeBob SquarePants even in my twenties. And surely, any time you introduce your kid to SpongeBob, you are almost sure they will become best friends.

If you asked me what’s so unique about it, I wouldn’t be sure to give a definitive answer but I could guess that it all has to do with the writer’s genius and ability to be a bit unconventional in creating a setting that has its own originality, unpredictable storylines, and vulnerable heroes that can easily be relatable to human realities. At the same time, it’s all packaged with humor – not exaggerated humor though – it is just good humor.
